AC Valhalla DLC: Everything Actually Being Added In 2021
Assassin's Creed Valhalla was released late last year, but publisher Ubisoft has plans for more Valhalla DLC through the end of 2021. AC Valhalla follows the exploits of Viking raider and Assassin recruit Eivor, and the story involves the Viking invasion of Britain in the 9th century. But based on Ubisoft's post-launch DLC roadmap, Eivor will be exploring much more of early medieval Europe.
AC Valhalla launched with a robust content roadmap, including The Legend of Beowulf DLC mission available on launch day and both paid and free updates to be released every few months throughout 2021. But Valhalla launched with technical issues, and the bugs and glitches have continued into Season 1 of its post-launch DLC, including December's limited-time seasonal Yule Festival event. When Ubisoft began offering controversial microtransactions for the game, fans became concerned this was a bigger priority than DLC.
However, Ubisoft's recent activity suggests an AC Valhalla patch may be imminent. If this patch can address the technical issues, it will be just in time for the final part of Season 1, River Raids. This new game mode allows players to recruit a crew of raiders and pillage settlements across three replayable maps, with new valuables and lore items to collect. River Raids will be available in February 2021, according to Ubisoft, but it does not yet have a specified release date.
As part of AC Valhalla's seasonal content, Yule Festival and River Raids are both free for all players. Along with River Raids, Valhalla's player-created, recruitable Jomsviking raiders will gain the ability to earn XP and rank up. This will bring Season 1 to a close, with Season 2 then beginning in March 2021.
In an October 2020 press release, Ubisoft said AC Valhalla Season 2 will include "a new combat-oriented game mode, a Jomsviking update, and Settlement festivals, along with new gear and cosmetic items," but no specific details about the season have been released so far Ubisoft's roadmap also includes "Free Content 3" and "Free Content 4," but it's unclear if these correspond to a potential Season 3 or Season 4 of free DLC
On the paid side, a subscription to AC Valhalla's season pass grants two full-fledged expansions. The first, Wrath of the Druids, will take players to Ireland, where they'll meet the Gaelic kings and go up against a mysterious druid cult known as the Children of Danu. It will also include a new smuggling mechanic and the ability to capture Gaelic ring forts. Wrath of the Druids is scheduled for spring 2021.
Next expansion, The Siege of Paris, will launch in summer 2021. This history-based Valhalla questline will take Eivor across the English Channel to 9th-century Paris, ruled by the kingdom of Francia and its king, Charles the Fat. Eivor will infiltrate the city and prepare it for an upcoming invasion, which will weaken the ruling empire.
Further Assassin's Creed: Valhalla DLC beyond 2021 is uncertain. It's rumored that Ubisoft will release the next Assassin's Creed sometime in 2022. It's likely the next game would mark the end of new content for Valhalla, like Valhalla did for Assassin's Creed Odyssey. But AC Valhalla's 2021 roadmap should keep players busy until it's time to buy a new game.
