Mario Kart's Most Popular Character Is a Tie Between Peach & Mario
A new survey has revealed that Mario and Princess Peach are the most popular character choices in the Mario Kart series, according to a player survey. Princess Peach has starred in her own game, but she's rarely playable in the mainline Super Mario Bros. games, so it's interesting that she's tied with the titular series protagonist in the beloved kart racing spin-off.
Princess Peach has always been a playable racer in the Mario Kart series since the very beginning, so that certainly helps her odds. She switches between classes as a medium and light racer depending on the game, but, over time, the Mario Kart series started to downplay the mechanical differences of the characters and put more of a focus on kart customization. This allowed fans to choose whatever character they liked the most, without being outclassed by the Bowser fans of the world.
The Mario Kart series has never been more popular, as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the bestselling Nintendo Switch game overall (although Animal Crossing: New Horizons is breathing down its neck). Redex has performed a survey of 2000 Mario Kart players in the UK, and it was discovered that Mario and Princess Peach are tied for the most popular characters in the series among those surveyed, with both receiving 11% of the vote. Yoshi and Toad were tied for second place with 8%, and Baby Peach came in third with 5%.
The study also determined that the most popular Mario Kart track is the Rainbow Road. A surprising revelation from the survey is that blue shell isn't the most hated item in Mario Kart - It's actually the Bullet Bill item that swept the vote. The most popular Mario Kart game is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which isn't surprising, as it's the most recent entry in the series. It's more surprising to see Double Dash in 8th place, considering the cult fanbase that the game has garnered over the years.
The popularity of Mario and Princess Peach means that it's not surprising to see them used so much by Mario Kart players. The games have always had an interesting roster of characters, but people who just want to quickly play through a tournament or battle mode are likely to go straight for the racer that they like the most. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has a massive roster, which even includes characters from other Nintendo franchises, like Link from The Legend of Zelda, but it seems that the diehard Nintendo fans prefer to choose Mario and his lady love as their Mario Kart main.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is available on Nintendo Switch.
