Samsung Smart Call Blocks Annoying Spam Calls: Here's How It Works

Samsung is updating its Smart Call feature to automatically blocks spam calls on the company's smartphones. Which means, new Samsung smartphone owners won't have to worry about the growing number of spam calls that many seem to receive on an almost daily basis. It's not the biggest feature on a Samsung phone, but it is one that should come in handy.

For context, Samsung isn't the only smartphone brand taking steps to combat unwanted spam calls. Google has already introduced a call screening feature that can block scammers before a phone even rings. However, with Galaxy smartphones typically being more commonly purchased than Pixel phones, Samsung's efforts against spam calls will likely impact a greater number of smartphone owners.

Samsung's spam-blocking feature is called Smart Call and the big recent change is that it is now powered by Hiya, following confirmation of an expanded partnership between the two companies. The improved Smart Call is scheduled to first become available on the Galaxy Note 20 series, but since Samsung has a deal with Hiya until 2025, consumers can probably expect the anti-spam feature to be included on all of the company's top tier smartphones next year. Smart Call works by letting users know immediately when a call is spam, blocking the call, and then letting the user report it. Enabling the feature is simply a matter of finding the "Caller ID and spam protection" option in the Call section of the Settings app on a Samsung smartphone. The feature is actually a part of the One UI 2.5 update and this could mean older Samsung phones also gain the improved spam protection, providing the device is due to receive the Samsung OS upgrade.

Spam blocking is not the only perk offered by Samsung's Smart Call technology, though it is one of the more helpful. Users no longer have to open an Internet browser in order to search for a local business or restaurant. Instead, Samsung phone owners can make the same searches in the Places tab of the phone app. Once the correct business is found, users have the option to call them or save the number to the contacts list for use at a later time. For those looking to enable the feature, it can be found under the "Other call settings" tab while in the "Call settings" menu. From there, users can toggle the option for "Search for places nearby" on, allowing the Smart Call feature to gather contacts and other information from venues in the vicinity.

Both these features appear to be aimed at reducing some of the everyday hassles experienced by phone users, such as having to deal with spam or trying to find a good café or coffee shop that's close by. Which one is more important will depend on whether spam is more annoying or coffee more crucial to the individual user. Either way, Smart Call provides a more direct approach to helping Samsung phone users get the information they need while blocking the spam they don't want.
