Beverly Hills, 90210: 10 Things About Andrea That Would Never Fly Today
Andrea Zuckerman (Gabrielle Carteris) was one of the female leads on the original juggernaut series Beverly Hills 90210, but within the group always seemed to have second class status. The bespeckled West Beverly Blaze editor was considered a nerd because she was smart, her clothes were purposely untrendy, and she was portrayed as the ultimate outsider—not only because of her physical appearance but because she didn't live in Beverly Hills, using her grandmother's address so she could scam her way into the school.
Her storyline may have worked at the time, but today, Andrea would not have been quite as beleaguered as she once came across.
10 Her Lack Of Drive To Graduate Early
Andrea was a little too laid-back for her smart-girl situation. Today, there is no way that someone is bright--and financially insecure--as she, would not be OD-ing on AP classes in order to get her diploma in three years and continue the overachieving tradition during college, which BTW would have been Yale, not California University. She would never have turned down the Ivy due to expensive tuition as she did in the 90s since graduating in debt seems to be the way of the current world.
9 Her Desperation To Be Part Of 'The Gang'
Brandon (Jason Priestley) & Co. would just not be as aspirational as they were back then when the world was smaller due to a lack of Internet access. Nowadays, Andrea would be part of the "girls who code" crowd, unafraid to show off her smarts and desire to develop skills that could get her job. She also wouldn't limit her passion for journalism to the school newspaper; she'd have a blog or a vlog, and her content would be appearing on high-profile digital publications.
8 Her Trying To Be Friends With Brenda, Donna, And Kelly
True, they were pretty, popular, and fashionable IT girls, but today, Andrea would want to be with a different kind of IT--as in Information Technology--girl.
Also, for such a big school, West Beverly didn't seem to offer more than the paper, cheerleading, sports, and the radio station were David Silver (Brian Austin Green) and eventually, Donna Martin (Tori Spelling) made the mark. Now, even if her school didn't offer much by way of extracurricular,s there are lots of organizations for specific interests where Andrea could socialize.
7 She Had No Friends Of Her Own Faith
West Beverly seemed like a pretty WASPy place, that's the reason Brandon and Brenda (Shannon Doherty) acclimated so easily. Andrea was Jewish and seemed to take pride in her religion and culture.
Even back then, it didn't make sense that aside from David and her grandmother, she didn't have more people in her life to share that with. (Didn't she know anyone from temple?) Now, with IG, Twitter, and Facebook groups, as well as sites like J-Date, she would have many more people of her faith to interact with.
6 Hangin' At The Peach Pit
Yes, in another time and place, if you wanted to find your friends you needed a meeting place (a hub, if you will), and back then it was the 50s-themed diner. How many burger deluxe platters can one eat, though? At least the Friends gang only had to buy a cuppa Joe. Now, with FaceTime, Skype, and Zoom, someone financially strapped like Andrea can see her posse face-to-face without spending money. Also, since everyone has a cell phone, it's easier to make a plan to meet up at a convenient location.
5 Her Working At The Beverly Hills Beach Club
In the mid-90s LA, summer gigs must have been hard to come by, or perhaps it was her blind love of Brandon—but no way would the Andrea of 2020 take that job. With her liberal political views, she would not spend her vacay as a cabana girl making sure one-percenters had a towel and sparkling water. If she couldn't get a two-month position in the career field of her dreams, brainiac Andrea would be tutoring underprivileged kids or doing some other do-gooder type job.
4 Her Lack Of Activism Opportunities
Back in the day, her radical activism revolved around getting Brandon (a guy) elected President of student government as well as campaigning against having the school play host to a controversial public figure. For someone as politically-minded as Andrea, this always seemed like a waste.
Today, there are so many more ways for young people to be involved—again, thanks to social media. Of all people, Andrea would be participating in marches for gun control, BLM, and women's rights—being asked to make a speech, of course.
3 Her Moment With Her Teacher
Thirty years ago, a high school senior developing a crush on her teacher and the teacher flirting back had a dreamy quality. Now, Andrea's relationship with Gil Meyer—AP English teacher and journalism advisor—would be seen for what it is: totally inappropriate. Even if she initiated the flirting, it would be up to Gil to shut it down. Andrea was ahead of her time when she accused the educator of sexism after he picked up Brandon to be The Blaze's editor-in-chief, eventually becoming co-editor with the Walsh twin.
2 Her Post-Pregnancy Speedy Marriage
It was love at first sight for Andrea and "Jesse Vasquez", who slept together without protection and then found she was pregnant. After considering her choices, Andrea decided to keep the baby and married Jesse quickly in a civil ceremony, eventually giving birth prematurely to daughter Hannah. Today, given the prevalence of reality shows like Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant, as well as celebs having the wedding after the child is born, Andrea would've had more socially acceptable options than making her relationship legal without giving herself time to think.
1 Her Shame About Getting Divorced
After she and Jesse left Southern California to raise Hannah in the northeast, things didn't go so well, which was revealed at one of her high school reunions. She confesses to her friends that she feels like a failure and even her best pal Brandon makes a judgmental remark. Today, people are more accepting that sometimes things just don't work out.
